Breaking Barriers, Building Futures: Honoring Women in Law Enforcement at FCPD

Fairfax County, VA – During Women’s History Month, the Fairfax County Police Department proudly recognizes the women who serve our community and help shape the future of law enforcement.

Women have long played a critical role in public safety, overcoming barriers and paving the way for future generations. Today, women at FCPD serve in every part of the department, from patrol and investigations to specialized units, leadership positions, and professional staff roles that support our mission.

Across the county, women respond to emergencies, mentor young people, and train recruits. They also serve in critical roles throughout the department, from patrol and specialized units such as SWAT, Crisis Intervention, Major Crimes, and Traffic Safety to investigative bureaus, administrative leadership, and support divisions. Their leadership, professionalism, and commitment to service strengthen our ability to protect and serve Fairfax County.

FCPD continues making measurable progress in recruiting and retaining women in policing. In recent academy sessions, women have represented approximately a quarter of each graduating class. These numbers reflect steady growth and align with the department’s commitment to the nationwide 30×30 Initiative, which aims to increase the representation of women in law enforcement to 30% by the year 2030.

Through dedicated hiring expos, women-focused recruitment events, college outreach, and mentorship programs, FCPD actively works to encourage women to pursue careers in policing. The department also hosts its Future Women in Law Enforcement program, which introduces high school-aged young women to career opportunities in public safety and provides firsthand insight into the profession. By engaging future generations early, FCPD continues building a strong and diverse pipeline of leaders.

This month, we honor the trailblazers who paved the way, the leaders who continue to elevate our profession, and the women of FCPD who serve with professionalism, courage, and dedication every day. As we look toward the future, we remain committed to strengthening opportunities for women in policing and ensuring our workforce reflects the diverse community we proudly serve.
