Detectives Investigating Fatal Pedestrian Crash Near Huntington

Mount Vernon Police District – Detectives from our Crash Reconstruction Unit (CRU) are investigating a fatal pedestrian crash that occurred early this morning near Huntington.

Today at approximately 1:43 a.m., officers responded to the intersection of Richmond Highway and Fort Hunt Road for a pedestrian crash involving two vehicles.

Preliminarily, CRU detectives determined Jerry Harris, 64, of Alexandria, was walking on Richmond Highway outside of a crosswalk when he was struck by 2019 Nissan Rogue traveling northbound. The driver of the Nissan remained on scene. A 2018 Toyota Rav4, also traveling northbound, subsequently struck the victim and fled the scene.

Harris was pronounced deceased at the scene. Through their investigation, detectives identified and located the Rav4 that struck Harris. Preliminarily, speed does not appear to be a factor in the crash. Alcohol remains under investigation as a factor for the pedestrian.

The investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Victim specialists from our Major Crimes Bureau’s Victim Services Division have been assigned to ensure that the victim’s family is receiving appropriate resources and assistance.
