Casting a Wide Net on Dangerous Driving: Road Shark Returns
Fairfax County, VA – The Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD), in partnership with the Virginia State Police (VSP), is launching the 2026 Road Shark campaign, a continued effort to reduce dangerous driving behaviors and make Fairfax County’s roads safer for everyone.
Since its introduction in 1999, Road Shark has remained one of the department’s longest-running traffic safety initiatives. The program combines targeted enforcement, community outreach, and data-driven strategies to address the driving behaviors most often linked to serious crashes.

Looking Back at 2025
Last year’s campaign demonstrated the continued impact of sustained enforcement and public awareness.
During the 2025 Road Shark campaign:
- Nearly 50,000 citations and warnings were issued across multiple enforcement waves,
- Officers focused on aggressive driving, speeding, distracted driving, and impaired driving,
- Increased visibility and community messaging reinforced safe driving habits across Fairfax County.
The chart below highlights enforcement activity from 2024 compared to 2025, illustrating the expanded reach of the initiative and the department’s continued focus on traffic safety.

Road Shark 2026: What Drivers Can Expect
This year’s campaign continues to center on three core strategies that have helped shape the program’s success.
Targeted Enforcement
FCPD officers and Virginia State Troopers will focus enforcement efforts in areas identified through crash data and traffic analysis. Officers will be watching for violations that commonly contribute to crashes, including:
- Speeding
- Aggressive driving
- Distracted driving
- School zone violations
- Driving under the influence
Increased visibility on the roadways helps deter dangerous driving behaviors and encourages compliance with traffic laws.
Community Outreach
Road Shark also focuses on prevention. Officers will continue engaging with residents through community events, educational initiatives, and social media messaging designed to promote safer driving habits.
Using Data to Drive Enforcement
Traffic data and crash trends help identify the locations and times where enforcement can have the greatest impact. This approach ensures officers are focusing resources where they can most effectively improve roadway safety.
Continuing the Effort
Traffic safety remains a top concern for many residents across Fairfax County. Through Road Shark, officers remain committed to addressing those concerns and reducing the behaviors that lead to crashes and injuries.
How Drivers Can Help
Everyone has a role in keeping Fairfax County’s roads safe. Drivers can help by:
- Following traffic laws
- Eliminating distractions while driving
- Respecting speed limits and school zones
