May on the Move: What You Need to Know About Traffic Safety This Month
Fairfax County, VA – May brings a renewed focus on traffic safety across Fairfax County, with initiatives centered on motorcycle awareness, impaired driving prevention, and bicycle safety. As more people take to the roads, trails, and sidewalks this spring, education and enforcement remain key to keeping everyone safe.

Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month
May is recognized nationwide as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, a reminder for drivers and riders alike to stay alert and share the road. Motorcycles are harder to see, and a moment of inattention can have serious consequences. Look twice, check blind spots, and give riders the space they need.
By the Numbers
Traffic safety is more than a message, it is a priority grounded in real impact. In 2025, Virginia recorded:
- 77 fatalities involving teen drivers
- 15 bicyclist fatalities
- 104 motorcycle-related fatalities
These numbers reinforce why continued education, outreach, and enforcement matter.
Impaired Driving Prevention: Cinco de Mayo & SoberRide®

Celebrations can quickly turn dangerous when impaired driving is involved. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than one-third of traffic fatalities nationwide involve impaired drivers.
To help keep roads safe, the Washington Regional Alcohol Program will offer its Cinco de Mayo SoberRide® service:
- May 5, 4:00 p.m. – May 6, 4:00 a.m.
Free, safe rides will be available throughout the Washington metropolitan area for those who may otherwise drive impaired. Planning ahead and using resources like SoberRide can prevent tragedy.
Key Initiatives & Events
Bike & Roll to School Day – May 6
Students and families across the region will walk and ride to school, promoting safe, active transportation. This nationwide event highlights the importance of pedestrian and bicycle safety in our communities.
Bike to Work Day – May 15
Commuters across the DMV will take part in a healthier, more sustainable way to travel. Fairfax County will host more than two dozen pit stops to support riders and encourage safe cycling practices.
Click It or Ticket – May 11–31
This high-visibility enforcement campaign, supported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, focuses on increasing seat belt use. In 2024 alone, 9,758 passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes throughout the United Staes were not wearing seat belts. Buckling up remains one of the simplest and most effective ways to save lives.
Moving Forward
Throughout May, our officers will be conducting enforcement and distributing educational materials during traffic stops, reinforcing safe driving behaviors across all road users.
Whether you are behind the wheel, on two wheels, or on foot, safety is a shared responsibility. Staying focused, making smart choices, and looking out for one another can make all the difference.
