Don’t Go Overboard: Boat and Water Safety Tips From FCPD
Fairfax County, VA – With school out for the year and America 250 celebrations approaching, the summer season is officially underway. The Fairfax County Police Department’s Marine Patrol Unit is working day and night to help keep our boaters safe. From patrolling local waterways to responding to emergencies, our team is ready so you can enjoy the water safely and responsibly.
Our Marine Patrol Unit is the only full-time, year-round local marine law enforcement unit in Northern Virginia. Our highly trained officers are equipped to handle a wide range of situations on the water, and marinas of the Occoquan River, Occoquan Reservoir, Belmont Bay, Pohick Bay, Little Hunting Creek, Burke Lake, and more.

Here are some essential water safety tips to help you and your loved ones stay safe this summer:
For Boaters:
- Check weather conditions: Review forecasts and water conditions before leaving the dock to avoid storms, high winds, and rough water.
- Make life jackets a priority: State law requires children under 13 to wear life jackets on all moving vessels, and adults are encouraged to wear them as well.
- Avoid alcohol and drugs while boating: Operating a vessel while impaired is both unsafe and prohibited by law.
- Carry safety equipment: Keep required items such as life jackets, fire extinguishers, navigation lights, and signaling devices readily available.
- Understand boating regulations: Learn waterway signs, right-of-way rules, and speed restrictions. Reckless operation and excessive speed are among the leading causes of boating accidents.
For Swimmers:
- Avoid diving and swimming in unfamiliar areas: Check water depth and look for submerged hazards before diving.
- Swim in designated areas: Stay in marked swimming zones and never swim near a boat launch or docked vessels.
- Don’t mix alcohol and water activities: Alcohol reduces awareness and balance, increasing the likelihood of injury or drowning.
- Watch children closely: Stay within arm’s reach of young children and avoid distractions near the water.
For Anyone Near the Water:
- Tell someone your plans: Share your destination and expected return time with a friend or family member.
- Respect wildlife and the environment: Responsible recreation helps keep our waterways healthy. Avoid disturbing animals, damaging vegetation, or leaving trash behind.
- In an emergency, call 911: Every second counts. Our Marine Patrol officers work alongside our helicopter and dive team to provide a rapid response when time matters most.
The water is a place for fun and relaxation, but only when approached with caution and responsibility. Our Marine Patrol Unit is proud to serve and protect our community both on land and on the water. This summer, help us keep everyone safe by following these safety tips and sharing awareness with others.
