One of the main topics of discussion centered around mentorship and opportunity:

“I come from the mindset of ‘I can do anything if I’m given an opportunity’ and that’s a big word, opportunity. That’s what all of this comes down to and I’ve had so many people help me throughout my career. When I left home at 17 years old, my dad said, ‘nobody owes you anything but an opportunity and it’s up to you what you do with it when you get it,’ and so every time I get an opportunity, I try to make the best of it.” – Deputy Chief Frederick Chambers

“I’ve had a lot of mentors within the agency, those who are in leadership positions and those who are just informal leaders, and they come from different backgrounds; not just women but also men who told me I could do it and encouraged me to do so.” – Major Veva Wallace-Spaulding
